Can I Use Prazipro and Melafix Together Safely?

Last Updated on December 23, 2021 by cmoarz

Can you mix MELAFIX and Prazipro without causing bad side effects in your aquarium? Mixing aquarium meds can be a tricky business as every product is different and their interactions can vary.

Before dosing the tank with anything please do your research, this is solely my take on using these products together.

Can I Use Prazipro and Melafix Together Safely?

So right off the bad, can I use Prazipro and Metroplex together? No. You shouldn’t mix these 2 medications in your aquarium as they do not play well together and you risk killing fish.

Prazipro is a  medication that contains Praziquantel, which can interfere with Melafix. It’s used to treat parasites and other unwanted parasitic creatures in fish and ponds.

While melafix isn’t technically an antibiotic, it has strong antibiotic traits and will interfere with the use of Praziquantel.

The interaction of the two can cause massive bacterial blooms, which can kill fish.

So, if you’re looking to use both of these medications in your aquarium, please do not combine them!

An Alternative Option Exists

Lucky for us, the aquarium hobby is big and there are a lot of options for medications.

If you’re looking to use both Melafix and Prazipro, I recommend replacing them instead with API General Cure (Metronidazole and Praziquantel) instead. This medication will deal with the parasites while also being compatible with API melafix, as all API products are compatible with each other.

You can buy API General Cure by following this link or at your local fish store.

Just remember you will still need to remove the active carbon from your filter before adding the medication.

Not doing so will cause the carbon to suck up the medication and be rendered useless.

After treatment time has finished you may return your active carbon into the aquarium to help (in addition to water changes) remove medications from the water column.

Can I Use Melafix With Other Treatments?

As an API product, Melafix is compatible and safe to use with any other API product in their catalog.

This includes, but is not limited to: API Stress Coat API Quick Cure API General Cure API Pimafix

As long as it’s an API product, you’re good to go and don’t need to worry about compatibility issues.

Can I Use Melafix With Other Brands Of Medication?

You should always check to see if what medication you’re planning on using is compatible with Melafix! If not, look for another option.

Medication interactions can be tricky and it’s always best to stay under one medication umbrella if you’re just starting out.
