Can Oscar Fish Eat Spiders? Will It Hurt Them in Any Way?

Last Updated on June 28, 2022 by cmoarz

So you happen to see an unlucky spider walking across the water in your aquarium and you’re wondering if your Oscar fish will eat it, but before you can even finish the thought, Up comes your oscar and gobbles it down!

In the wild, Oscars are known to eat just about anything they can fit in their mouths, including other fish, crustaceans, and even small mammals. So it’s really no surprise that they would go after a spider given the opportunity.

In fact, Insects are a rather large part of the oscar’s diet. While most of us think of fish as primarily eating other fish, the reality is that a good portion of their diet in the wild consists of insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.

So if you’re wondering if it’s okay for your oscar to eat a spider, the answer is yes, it is perfectly fine. In fact, it may even be good for them! Spiders are a great source of protein and other nutrients that can help keep your fish healthy and strong.

So if you see your oscar gobbling up a spider, don’t be alarmed, it’s just doing what comes naturally!

Should you purposefully feed your oscar spiders?

Frankly, I don’t see any need to do so. If your fish is getting a good diet of pellets or other commercial foods, then they are probably getting all the nutrients they need without having to supplement with insects.

There are plenty of much better more nutritious foods you could be feeding your fish anyway, so I wouldn’t bother with spiders.

That being said, there’s no harm in giving them an occasional spider if you happen to have one handy (just make sure it’s not poisonous!). Your oscar will probably enjoy it and it may even help them stay healthy and strong.

So there you have it, Oscars can eat spiders without any problems and it can actually be good for them!

It can certainly be entertaining to watch your oscar eat a spider, just make sure you don’t have any poisonous ones in your aquarium!
